CpG methylation is an epigenetic modification that isnimportant for embryonic development, imprinting, and X-chromosomeninactivation. Studies in mice have demonstrated that DNAnmethylation is required for mammalian development. This genenencodes a nuclear protein with similarity to DNAnmethyltransferases. This protein is not thought to function as anDNA methyltransferase as it does not contain the amino acidnresidues necessary for methyltransferase activity. However, thisnprotein does stimulate de novo methylation by DNA cytosinenmethyltransferase 3 alpha and it is thought to be required for thenestablishment of maternal genomic imprints. This protein alsonmediates transcriptional repression through interaction withnhistone deacetylase 1. Alternative splicing results in twontranscript variants. An additional splice variant has beenndescribed but its biological validity has not been determined.
