Hepatocyte growth factor regulates cell growth, cellnmotility, and morphogenesis by activating a tyrosine kinasensignaling cascade after binding to the proto-oncogenic c-Metnreceptor. Hepatocyte growth factor is secreted by mesenchymal cellsnand acts as a multi-functional cytokine on cells of mainlynepithelial origin. Its ability to stimulate mitogenesis, cellnmotility, and matrix invasion gives it a central role innangiogenesis, tumorogenesis, and tissue regeneration. It isnsecreted as a single inactive polypeptide and is cleaved by serinenproteases into a 69-kDa alpha-chain and 34-kDa beta-chain. Andisulfide bond between the alpha and beta chains produces thenactive, heterodimeric molecule. The protein belongs to thenplasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases but has no detectablenprotease activity. Alternative splicing of this gene producesnmultiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [providednby RefSeq].
