This gene encodes one of several forms of glutamic acidndecarboxylase, identified as a major autoantigen inninsulin-dependent diabetes. The enzyme encoded is responsible forncatalyzing the production of gamma-aminobutyric acid fromnL-glutamic acid. A pathogenic role for this enzyme has beennidentified in the human pancreas since it has been identified as annautoantibody and an autoreactive T cell target in insulin-dependentndiabetes. This gene may also play a role in the stiff man syndrome.nAlternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants thatnencode the same protein.
