The protein encoded by this gene is actually anpreproprotein that is cleaved into four distinct mature peptides.nOne of these, glucagon, is a pancreatic hormone that counteractsnthe glucose-lowering action of insulin by stimulatingnglycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. Glucagon is a ligand for anspecific G-protein linked receptor whose signalling pathwayncontrols cell proliferation. Two of the other peptides are secretednfrom gut endocrine cells and promote nutrient absorption throughndistinct mechanisms. Finally, the fourth peptide is similar tonglicentin, an active enteroglucagon.
