Dentin matrix acidic phosphoprotein is an extracellularnmatrix protein and a member of the small integrin binding ligandnN-linked glycoprotein family. This protein, which is critical fornproper mineralization of bone and dentin, is present in diversencells of bone and tooth tissues. The protein contains a largennumber of acidic domains, multiple phosphorylation sites, anfunctional arg-gly-asp cell attachment sequence, and a DNA bindingndomain. In undifferentiated osteoblasts it is primarily a nuclearnprotein that regulates the expression of osteoblast-specific genes.nDuring osteoblast maturation the protein becomes phosphorylated andnis exported to the extracellular matrix, where it orchestratesnmineralized matrix formation. Mutations in the gene are known toncause autosomal recessive hypophosphatemia, a disease thatnmanifests as rickets and osteomalacia. The gene structure isnconserved in mammals. Two transcript variants encoding differentnisoforms have been described for this gene.
