This gene encodes a vitamin K-dependent plasmanglycoprotein. The encoded protein is cleaved to its activated formnby the thrombin-thrombomodulin complex. This activated formncontains a serine protease domain and functions in degradation ofnthe activated forms of coagulation factors V and VIII. Mutations innthis gene have been associated with thrombophilia due to protein Cndeficiency, neonatal purpura fulminans, and recurrent venousnthrombosis.
