Cytochrome c oxidase (COX), the terminal component of thenmitochondrial respiratory chain, catalyzes the electron transfernfrom reduced cytochrome c to oxygen. This component is anheteromeric complex consisting of 3 catalytic subunits encoded bynmitochondrial genes and multiple structural subunits encoded bynnuclear genes. The mitochondrially-encoded subunits function innelectron transfer, and the nuclear-encoded subunits may function innthe regulation and assembly of the complex. This nuclear genenencodes polypeptide 1 (muscle isoform) of subunit VIIa and thenpolypeptide 1 is present only in muscle tissues. Other polypeptidesnof subunit VIIa are present in both muscle and nonmuscle tissues, nand are encoded by different genes.
