This gene encodes a member of the sialomucin proteinnfamily. The encoded protein was originally identified as annimportant component of glomerular podocytes. Podocytes are highlyndifferentiated epithelial cells with interdigitating foot processesncovering the outer aspect of the glomerular basement membrane.nOther biological activities of the encoded protein include: bindingnin a membrane protein complex with Na+/H+ exchanger regulatorynfactor to intracellular cytoskeletal elements, playing a role innhematopoetic cell differentiation, and being expressed in vascularnendothelium cells and binding to L-selectin.
