This gene encodes pyruvate carboxylase, which requiresnbiotin and ATP to catalyse the carboxylation of pyruvate tonoxaloacetate. The active enzyme is a homotetramer arranged in antetrahedron which is located exclusively in the mitochondrialnmatrix. Pyruvate carboxylase is involved in gluconeogenesis,nlipogenesis, insulin secretion and synthesis of thenneurotransmitter glutamate. Mutations in this gene have beennassociated with pyruvate carboxylase deficiency. Alternativelynspliced transcript variants with different 5' UTRs, but encodingnthe same protein, have been found for this gene. [provided bynRefSeq].
