The protein encoded by this gene is a helix-loop-helixn(HLH) protein that can form heterodimers with members of the basicnHLH family of transcription factors. The encoded protein has no DNAnbinding activity and therefore can inhibit the DNA binding andntranscriptional activation ability of basic HLH proteins with whichnit interacts. This protein may play a role in cell growth,nsenescence, and differentiation. Two transcript variants encodingndifferent isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided bynRefSeq].
