This gene encodes coagulation factor XI of the bloodncoagulation cascade. This protein is present in plasma as anzymogen, which is a unique plasma coagulation enzyme because itnexists as a homodimer consisting of two identical polypeptidenchains linked by disulfide bonds. During activation of the plasmanfactor XI, an internal peptide bond is cleaved by factor XIIa (ornXII) in each of the two chains, resulting in activated factor XIa,na serine protease composed of two heavy and two light chains heldntogether by disulfide bonds. This activated plasma factor XIntriggers the middle phase of the intrisic pathway of bloodncoagulation by activating factor IX.
