The protein encoded by this gene is localized to thenmitochondrion and acts as a homohexamer to recycle glutamate duringnneurotransmission. The encoded enzyme catalyzes the reversiblenoxidative deamination of glutamate to alpha-ketoglutarate. Thisngene is intronless.
