This gene encodes a member of the lysyl oxidase genenfamily. The prototypic member of the family is essential to thenbiogenesis of connective tissue, encoding an extracellularncopper-dependent amine oxidase that catalyses the first step in thenformation of crosslinks in collagens and elastin. A highlynconserved amino acid sequence at the C-terminus end appears to bensufficient for amine oxidase activity, suggesting that each familynmember may retain this function. The N-terminus is poorly conservednand may impart additional roles in developmental regulation,nsenescence, tumor suppression, cell growth control, and chemotaxisnto each member of the family. Alternatively spliced transcriptnvariants of this gene have been reported but their full-lengthnnature has not been determined.
