Angiotensin II is a potent vasopressor hormone and anprimary regulator of aldosterone secretion. It is an importantneffector controlling blood pressure and volume in thencardiovascular system. It acts through at least two types ofnreceptors. This gene encodes the type 1 receptor which is thoughtnto mediate the major cardiovascular effects of angiotensin II. Thisngene may play a role in the generation of reperfusion arrhythmiasnfollowing restoration of blood flow to ischemic or infarctednmyocardium. It was previously thought that a related gene, denotednas AGTR1B, existed; however, it is now believed that there is onlynone type 1 receptor gene in humans. At least five transcriptnvariants have been described for this gene. Additional variantsnhave been described but their full-length nature has not beenndetermined. The entire coding sequence is contained in the terminalnexon and is present in all transcript variants. [provided bynRefSeq].
