This gene belongs to the A/B subfamily of ubiquitouslynexpressed heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs). ThenhnRNPs are RNA binding proteins and they complex with heterogeneousnnuclear RNA (hnRNA). These proteins are associated with pre-mRNAsnin the nucleus and appear to influence pre-mRNA processing andnother aspects of mRNA metabolism and transport. While all of thenhnRNPs are present in the nucleus, some seem to shuttle between thennucleus and the cytoplasm. The hnRNP proteins have distinct nucleicnacid binding properties. The protein encoded by this gene has twonrepeats of quasi-RRM domains that bind to RNAs. It is one of thenmost abundant core proteins of hnRNP complexes and it is localizednto the nucleoplasm. This protein, along with other hnRNP proteins,nis exported from the nucleus, probably bound to mRNA, and isnimmediately re-imported. Its M9 domain acts as both a nuclearnlocalization and nuclear export signal. The encoded protein isninvolved in the packaging of pre-mRNA into hnRNP particles,ntransport of poly A+ mRNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, andnmay modulate splice site selection. It is also thought have anprimary role in the formation of specific myometrial proteinnspecies in parturition. Multiple alternatively spliced transcriptnvariants have been found for this gene but only two transcripts arenfully described.
