This gene encodes alpha-lactalbumin, a principal proteinnof milk. Alpha-lactalbumin forms the regulatory subunit of thenlactose synthase (LS) heterodimer and betan1,4-galactosyltransferase (beta4Gal-T1) forms the catalyticncomponent. Together, these proteins enable LS to produce lactose byntransfering galactose moieties to glucose. As a monomer,nalpha-lactalbumin strongly binds calcium and zinc ions and maynpossess bactericidal or antitumor activity. A folding variant ofnalpha-lactalbumin, called HAMLET, likely induces apoptosis in tumornand immature cells.
