This gene encodes a mitochondrial transcription factornthat is a key activator of mitochondrial transcription as well as anparticipant in mitochondrial genome replication. Studies in micenhave demonstrated that this gene product is required to regulatenthe mitochondrial genome copy number and is essential for embryonicndevelopment. A mouse model for Kearns-Sayre syndrome was producednwhen expression of this gene was eliminated by targeted disruptionnin heart and muscle cells.
