The protein encoded by this gene is a member of thenTNF-receptor superfamily. This receptor has been found to benessential in mediating a broad variety of immune and inflammatorynresponses including T cell-dependent immunoglobulin classnswitching, memory B cell development, and germinal centernformation. AT-hook transcription factor AKNA is reported toncoordinately regulate the expression of this receptor and itsnligand, which may be important for homotypic cell interactions.nAdaptor protein TNFR2 interacts with this receptor and serves as anmediator of the signal transduction. The interaction of thisnreceptor and its ligand is found to be necessary fornamyloid-beta-induced microglial activation, and thus is thought tonbe an early event in Alzheimer disease pathogenesis. Twonalternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene encodingndistinct isoforms have been reported.
