The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the acyl-CoAndehydrogenase family, which is a family of mitochondrialnflavoenzymes involved in fatty acid and branched chain amino-acidnmetabolism. This protein is one of the four enzymes that catalyzenthe initial step of mitochondrial beta-oxidation of straight-chainnfatty acid. Defects in this gene are the cause of long-chainnacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCAD) deficiency, leading to nonketoticnhypoglycemia.
