AJs arennecessary for the creation and maintenance of epithelial cellnlayers by regulating cell growth and adhesion between cells. Thenencoded protein also anchors the actin cytoskeleton and may benresponsible for transmitting the contact inhibition signal thatncauses cells to stop dividing once the epithelial sheet isncomplete. Finally, this protein binds to the product of the APCngene, which is mutated in adenomatous polyposis of the colon.nMutations in this gene are a cause of colorectal cancer (CRC),npilomatrixoma (PTR), medulloblastoma (MDB), and ovarian cancer.nThree transcript variants encoding the same protein have been foundnfor this gene.
