The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the family ofnP-type cation transport ATPases, and to the subfamily of Na+/K+n-ATPases. Na+/K+ -ATPase is an integral membrane proteinnresponsible for establishing and maintaining the electrochemicalngradients of Na and K ions across the plasma membrane. Thesengradients are essential for osmoregulation, for sodium-coupledntransport of a variety of organic and inorganic molecules, and fornelectrical excitability of nerve and muscle. This enzyme isncomposed of two subunits, a large catalytic subunit (alpha) and ansmaller glycoprotein subunit (beta). The catalytic subunit ofnNa+/K+ -ATPase is encoded by multiple genes. This gene encodes annalpha 3 subunit.
