The galectins are a family of beta-galactoside-bindingnproteins implicated in modulating cell-cell and cell-matrixninteractions. Differential and in situ hybridization studiesnindicate that this lectin is specifically expressed innkeratinocytes and found mainly in stratified squamous epithelium. Anduplicate copy of this gene (GeneID:653499) is found adjacent to,nbut on the opposite strand on chromosome 19.
