The mouse homolog of this gene produces fused toes andnthymic hyperplasia in heterozygous mutant animals while homozygousnmutants die in early development. This gene may play a role innapoptosis as these morphological abnormalities are caused bynaltered patterns of programmed cell death. The protein encoded bynthis gene is similar to the ubiquitin ligase domain of othernubiquitin-conjugating enzymes but lacks the conserved cysteinenresidue that enables those enzymes to conjugate ubiquitin to thentarget protein. This protein interacts directly withnserine/threonine kinase protein kinase B (PKB)/Akt and modulatesnPKB activity by enhancing the phosphorylation of PKB's regulatorynsites. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variantsnencoding the same protein.
