This gene encodes a zonula occluden that is a member ofnthe membrane-associated guanylate kinase homolog family. Thenencoded protein functions as a component of the tight junctionnbarrier in epithelial and endothelial cells and is necessary fornproper assembly of tight junctions. Mutation in this gene have beennidentified in patients with hypercholanemia. Alternate splicingnresults in multiple transcript variants.
