This gene encodes a transmembrane protein with twonextracellular Kunitz domains that inhibits a variety of serinenproteases. The protein inhibits HGF activator which prevents thenformation of active hepatocyte growth factor. This gene is anputative tumor suppressor, and mutations in this gene result inncongenital sodium diarrhea. Multiple transcript variants encodingndifferent isoforms have been found for this gene.
