This gene encodes a member of the degenerin/epithelialnsodium channel (DEG/ENaC) superfamily. The members of this familynare amiloride-sensitive sodium channels that contain intracellularnN and C termini, two hydrophobic transmembrane regions, and a largenextracellular loop, which has many cysteine residues with conservednspacing. The member encoded by this gene is an acid sensor and maynplay an important role in the detection of lasting pH changes. Innaddition, a heteromeric association between this member and ACCN1nhas been observed as proton-gated channels sensitive to gadolinium.nAlternative splicing of this gene generates three transcriptnvariants encoding distinct isoforms.
