The protein encoded by this gene is the gamma component ofnfibrinogen, a blood-borne glycoprotein comprised of three pairs ofnnonidentical polypeptide chains. Following vascular injury,nfibrinogen is cleaved by thrombin to form fibrin which is the mostnabundant component of blood clots. In addition, various cleavagenproducts of fibrinogen and fibrin regulate cell adhesion andnspreading, display vasoconstrictor and chemotactic activities, andnare mitogens for several cell types. Mutations in this gene lead tonseveral disorders, including dysfibrinogenemia, hypofibrinogenemianand thrombophilia. Alternative splicing results in two transcriptnvariants encoding different isoforms.
