This gene was identified as a tumor suppressor that isnmutated in a large number of cancers at high frequency. The proteinnencoded this gene is a phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-trisphosphaten3-phosphatase. It contains a tensin like domain as well as ancatalytic domain similar to that of the dual specificity proteinntyrosine phosphatases. Unlike most of the protein tyrosinenphosphatases, this protein preferentially dephosphorylatesnphosphoinositide substrates. It negatively regulates intracellularnlevels of phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-trisphosphate in cells andnfunctions as a tumor suppressor by negatively regulating AKT/PKBnsignaling pathway.
