This gene encodes a chromatin-associated enzyme,npoly(ADP-ribosyl)transferase, which modifies various nuclearnproteins by poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation. The modification is dependentnon DNA and is involved in the regulation of various importantncellular processes such as differentiation, proliferation, andntumor transformation and also in the regulation of the molecularnevents involved in the recovery of cell from DNA damage. Innaddition, this enzyme may be the site of mutation in Fanconinanemia, and may participate in the pathophysiology of type Indiabetes.
