Osteoclasts are multinucleated cells that resorb bone andnare essential for bone homeostasis. This gene encodes annosteoclast-associated receptor (OSCAR), which is a member of thenleukocyte receptor complex (LRC) protein family that plays criticalnroles in the regulation of both innate and adaptive immunenresponses. Different from the other LRC members, OSCAR expressionnis detected specifically in preosteoclasts or mature osteoclasts.nOSCAR may be an important bone-specific regulator of osteoclastndifferentiation. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variantsnencoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
