Kallikreins are a subgroup of serine proteases havingndiverse physiological functions. Growing evidence suggests thatnmany kallikreins are implicated in carcinogenesis and some havenpotential as novel cancer and other disease biomarkers. This genenis one of the fifteen kallikrein subfamily members located in ancluster on chromosome 19. Its protein product is a protease presentnin seminal plasma. It is thought to function normally in thenliquefaction of seminal coagulum, presumably by hydrolysis of thenhigh molecular mass seminal vesicle protein. Serum level of thisnprotein, called PSA in the clinical setting, is useful in thendiagnosis and monitoring of prostatic carcinoma. Alternate splicingnof this gene generates several transcript variants encodingndifferent isoforms.
