Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH; MIM 275120), a smallnneuropeptide, is widely distributed throughout the central andnperipheral nervous system as well as in extraneural tissues. Thenpeptide is synthesized in the hypothalamus and transported by thenportal vascular system to the anterior pituitary where it acts onnthyrotropic and lactotropic cells to promote secretion of TSH andnprolactin, respectively. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptor isna G protein-coupled receptor that activates the inositolnphospholipid-calcium-protein kinase C transduction pathway upon thenbinding of TRH. The TRHR gene is expressed in the thyrotrope cellsnof the anterior pituitary.
