Metallothionein proteins are highly conservednlow-molecular-weight cysteine-rich proteins that are induced by andnbind to heavy metal ions and have no enzymatic activity. They maynplay a central role in the regulation of cell growth andndifferentiation and are involved in spermatogenesis. This genenencodes a metallothionein-like protein which has been shown to benexpressed differentially in mouse testis and ovary. Two transcriptnvariants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
