The protein encoded by this gene is a secreted,nextracellular matrix protein containing an Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) motifnand calcium-binding EGF-like domains. It promotes adhesion ofnendothelial cells through interaction of integrins and the RGDnmotif. It is prominently expressed in developing arteries but lessnso in adult vessels. However, its expression is reinduced innballoon-injured vessels and atherosclerotic lesions, notably innintimal vascular smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells.nTherefore, the protein encoded by this gene may play a role innvascular development and remodeling. Defects in this gene are ancause of autosomal dominant cutis laxa, autosomal recessive cutisnlaxa type I (CL type I), and age-related macular degeneration typen3 (ARMD3).
