The protein encoded by this gene hydrolyzes cerebrosidensulfate to cerebroside and sulfate. Defects in this gene lead tonmetachromatic leucodystrophy (MLD), a progressive demyelinationndisease which results in a variety of neurological symptoms andnultimately death. Alternatively spliced transcript variants havenbeen described for this gene.
