This gene is a member of the EPO/TPO family and encodes ansecreted, glycosylated cytokine composed of four alpha helicalnbundles. The protein is found in the plasma and regulates red cellnproduction by promoting erythroid differentiation and initiatingnhemoglobin synthesis. This protein also has neuroprotectivenactivity against a variety of potential brain injuries andnantiapoptotic functions in several tissue types. [provided bynRefSeq].
