This gene encodes a receptor for the Fc portion ofnimmunoglobulin G, and it is involved in the removal ofnantigen-antibody complexes from the circulation, as well as othernother antibody-dependent responses. This gene (FCGR3A) is highlynsimilar to another nearby gene (FCGR3B) located on chromosome 1.nThe receptor encoded by this gene is expressed on natural killern(NK) cells as an integral membrane glycoprotein anchored through antransmembrane peptide, whereas FCGR3B is expressed onnpolymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) where the receptor is anchorednthrough a phosphatidylinositol (PI) linkage. Mutations in this genenhave been linked to susceptibility to recurrent viral infections,nsusceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus, and alloimmunenneonatal neutropenia. Alternatively spliced transcript variantsnencoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
