This gene product mediates the attachment of erythroblastsnto macrophages. This attachment promotes terminal maturation andnenucleation of erythroblasts, presumably by suppressing apoptosis.nThis protein is an integral membrane protein with the N-terminus onnthe extracellular side and the C-terminus on the cytoplasmic sidenof the cell. Two immunologically related isoforms of erythroblastnmacrophage protein with apparent molecular weights of 33 kD and 36nkD were detected in macrophage membranes; this gene encodes thenlarger isoform. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variantsnencoding distinct isoforms have been found for this gene, but thenbiological validity of some variants has not been determined.
