Thymus development depends on a complex series ofninteractions between thymocytes and the stromal component of thenorgan. Epithelial V-like antigen (EVA) is expressed in thymusnepithelium and strongly downregulated by thymocyte developmentalnprogression. This gene is expressed in the thymus and in severalnepithelial structures early in embryogenesis. It is highlynhomologous to the myelin protein zero and, in thymus-derivednepithelial cell lines, is poorly soluble in nonionic detergents, nstrongly suggesting an association to the cytoskeleton. Itsncapacity to mediate cell adhesion through a homophilic interactionnand its selective regulation by T cell maturation might imply thenparticipation of EVA in the earliest phases of thymusnorganogenesis. The protein bears a characteristic V-type domain andntwo potential N-glycosylation sites in the extracellular domain; anputative serine phosphorylation site for casein kinase 2 is alsonpresent in the cytoplasmic tail. Two transcript variants encodingnthe same protein have been found for this gene. [provided bynRefSeq].
