Fertilization consists of a sequence of specific cell-cellninteractions culminating in the fusion of the sperm and egg plasmanmembranes. Recognition, binding, and fusion occur through theninteraction of complementary molecules that are localized tonspecific domains of the sperm and egg plasma membranes. In thensperm, the postacrosomal region or equatorial segment is involvednin sperm-egg plasma membrane fusion. The protein encoded by thisngene is a member of the cysteine-rich secretory protein (CRISP)nfamily. This protein is expressed in the epididymis, is secretedninto the epididymal lumen, and binds to the postacrosomal region ofnthe sperm head where it plays a role at fertilization in sperm-eggnfusion through complementary sites localized on the egg surface.nTwo isoforms are encoded by transcript variants of this gene.
