This gene encodes the small subunit of a p53-induciblenribonucleotide reductase. This heterotetrameric enzyme catalyzesnthe conversion of ribonucleoside diphosphates tondeoxyribonucleoside diphosphates. The product of this reaction isnnecessary for DNA synthesis. Mutations in this gene have beennassociated with autosomal recessive mitochondrial DNA depletionnsyndrome, autosomal dominant progressive externalnophthalmoplegia-5, and mitochondrial neurogastrointestinalnencephalopathy. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have beenndescribed.
