In mammals, histamine is metabolized by two majornpathways: N(tau)-methylation via histamine N-methyltransferase andnoxidative deamination via diamine oxidase. This gene encodes thenfirst enzyme which is found in the cytosol and usesnS-adenosyl-L-methionine as the methyl donor. In the mammaliannbrain, the neurotransmitter activity of histamine is controlled bynN(tau)-methylation as diamine oxidase is not found in the centralnnervous system. A common genetic polymorphism affects the activitynlevels of this gene product in red blood cells. Multiplenalternatively spliced transcript variants that encode differentnproteins have been found for this gene.
