This gene encodes the erythropoietin receptor which is anmember of the cytokine receptor family. Upon erythropoietinnbinding, this receptor activates Jak2 tyrosine kinase whichnactivates different intracellular pathways including: Ras/MAPnkinase, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and STAT transcriptionnfactors. The stimulated erythropoietin receptor appears to have anrole in erythroid cell survival. Defects in the erythropoietinnreceptor may produce erythroleukemia and familial erythrocytosis.nDysregulation of this gene may affect the growth of certain tumors.nAlternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
