This gene encodes a lysosomal hyaluronidase.nHyaluronidases intracellularly degrade hyaluronan, one of the majornglycosaminoglycans of the extracellular matrix. Hyaluronan isnthought to be involved in cell proliferation, migration andndifferentiation. This enzyme is active at an acidic pH and is thenmajor hyaluronidase in plasma. Mutations in this gene arenassociated with mucopolysaccharidosis type IX, or hyaluronidasendeficiency. The gene is one of several related genes in a region ofnchromosome 3p21.3 associated with tumor suppression. Multiplentranscript variants encoding different isoforms have been found fornthis gene.
