Cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans are composed ofna membrane-associated protein core substituted with a variablennumber of heparan sulfate chains. Members of the glypican-relatednintegral membrane proteoglycan family (GRIPS) contain a corenprotein anchored to the cytoplasmic membrane via a glycosylnphosphatidylinositol linkage. These proteins may play a role in thencontrol of cell division and growth regulation. The protein encodednby this gene can bind to and inhibit the dipeptidyl peptidasenactivity of CD26, and it can induce apoptosis in certain cellntypes. Deletion mutations in this gene are associated withnSimpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome, also known as Simpson dysmorphiansyndrome. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcriptnvariants.
