This gene is a member of the septin gene family ofnnucleotide binding proteins, originally described in yeast as cellndivision cycle regulatory proteins. Septins are highly conserved innyeast, Drosophila, and mouse and appear to regulate cytoskeletalnorganization. Disruption of septin function disturbs cytokinesisnand results in large multinucleate or polyploid cells. This gene isnmapped to 22q11, the region frequently deleted in DiGeorge andnvelocardiofacial syndromes. A translocation involving the MLL genenand this gene has also been reported in patients with acute myeloidnleukemia. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcriptnvariants. The presence of a non-consensus polyA signal (AACAAT) innthis gene also results in read-through transcription into thendownstream neighboring gene (GP1BB; platelet glycoprotein Ib),nwhereby larger, non-coding transcripts are produced.
