Sulfotransferase enzymes catalyze the sulfate conjugationnof many hormones, neurotransmitters, drugs, and xenobioticncompounds. These cytosolic enzymes are different in their tissuendistributions and substrate specificities. The gene structuren(number and length of exons) is similar among family members. Thisngene encodes a phenol sulfotransferase with thermolabile enzymenactivity. Four sulfotransferase genes are located on the p arm ofnchromosome 16; this gene and SULT1A4 arose from a segmentalnduplication. This gene is the most centromeric of the fournsulfotransferase genes. Read-through transcription exists betweennthis gene and the upstream SLX1A (SLX1 structure-specificnendonuclease subunit homolog A) gene that encodes a proteinncontaining GIY-YIG domains.
