The modification of proteins with ubiquitin is annimportant cellular mechanism for targeting abnormal or short-livednproteins for degradation. Ubiquitination involves at least threenclasses of enzymes: ubiquitin-activating enzymes, or E1s,nubiquitin-conjugating enzymes, or E2s, and ubiquitin-proteinnligases, or E3s. This gene encodes a member of the E2nubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family. This enzyme functions in thenubiquitination of the tumor-suppressor protein p53, which isninduced by an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase. Two alternativelynspliced transcript variants have been found for this gene and theynencode distinct isoforms.
