The mitochondrial oxidation of long-chain fatty acids isninitiated by the sequential action of carnitinenpalmitoyltransferase I (which is located in the outer membrane andnis detergent-labile) and carnitine palmitoyltransferase II (whichnis located in the inner membrane and is detergent-stable), togethernwith a carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase. CPT I is the key enzymenin the carnitine-dependent transport across the mitochondrial innernmembrane and its deficiency results in a decreased rate of fattynacid beta-oxidation. Alternatively spliced transcript variantsnencoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
