The protein encoded by this gene is a member of thenprotein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) family. PTPs are known to bensignaling molecules that regulate a variety of cellular processesnincluding cell growth, differentiation, mitotic cycle, andnoncogenic transformation. This PTP possesses an extracellularnregion, a single transmembrane region, and a single catalyticndomain, and thus represents a receptor-type PTP. This PTP was foundnto be an autoantigen that is reactive with insulin-dependentndiabetes mellitus (IDDM) patient sera, and thus may be a potentialntarget of autoimmunity in diabetes mellitus.
